Our Student Council has an influential and important voice in the development of our school.
Students from all year groups are represented on the student council team, with a nominated form rep from every tutor group joining each meeting. The sessions are led by our Sixth Form Senior Prefect Team and the council team meets on a half-termly basis.
In recent years, the School Council has been involved in shaping our school’s behaviour system, influencing our equality, diversity and inclusion programme, discussing ways to improve our enrichment programme and environmental sustainability across the school, the shaping of our school’s behaviour system, reviewing our school uniform, which resulted in all students now having the option to wear tailored shorts, and making improvements to our recycling and sustainability habits.
The student body gets to have a ‘voice’ regarding key matters in school such as:
Teaching and Learning
Health and Safety
External fundraising events within the community
Youth Conferences
Sixth Form
Anti-bullying
Academic mentoring
Representatives of the student council take turns in attending governing body meetings to represent the student voice. More recently they have also been requested to participate in the student panel interviews for new staff appointments and also to represent the school at the termly Stevenage Parliament meetings, which is attended by students from schools throughout the town.
They are a very important and integral group of young people who are passionate about learning, their school and their community.
Following each student council meeting, we also consult parents and staff on the same topic each half-term to ensure that we are able to take the views and ideas of all those in the TAA community into account. This allows us to make informed decisions when we create, shape and review our school policies.
Student Council Meetings and Parent Voice
During our last student council session of the year, we focused on our rewards system. We listened carefully to the views of students, parents and staff and are pleased to announce that we will be making a few changes from next year as a result of everyone’s feedback. Please see the presentation below, which we shared with all students at the end of last term. This gives an overview of the updates we will be putting into place from September:
